The story of Joseph Brandmeyer is an interesting and inspiring one. From pharmaceutical executive to former owner of a $500 million dollar pharmaceutical colossus, Joe’s life has taken many turns. Though humble, Joe recognizes his company’s unique existence, due in large part to he and his wife Jeanne’s leadership, determination, daring and compassionate approach to running the business.
The leap of faith that inevitably gave life to their most successful venture yet began in 1985 when Joe and Jeanne decided to invest their life savings of $500,000 in starting a new business to commercialize skin antisepsis products. Although it seemed unorthodox for a couple of 48 and 46 years old to take such a risk, they and their eight kids charged on and named their new company Medi-Flex, later renamed Enturia, which was sold in May of 2008 to Cardinal Health for about $500 million.
In addition to setting an example of excellence in business with their company, the couple changed the face and history of modern medicine. They recognized there was a much better way to sterilize patients’ skin before starting invasive medical procedures, and invested heavily in developing new medical devices to deliver an improved antiseptic solution. Their solution, ChloraPrep, was approved by the FDA in 2000 and has become the gold standard for skin antisepsis, as it has prevented thousands of infections and deaths in hospitals across the United States.
